More Than Phonics: How Orthographic Mapping Changes the Game
In a recent webinar with LevelUp Reader, Dr. Tim Rasinski emphasized the importance of orthographic mapping — the process of helping students “burn” words into their memory by connecting sounds and letters. As Dr. Rasinski explained, “what we want to do is get kids to orthographically map words into their brains… this is the central key to phonics.” Drawing from the work of experts like David Kilpatrick and Linnea Ehri, he shared how using a variety of tools — such as interactive phonics books, word ladders, and decodable texts — creates the synergy needed to build lasting word recognition. He also pointed out that while phonics instruction is essential, it is not sufficient on its own for long-term reading success. Research shows that simply adding more phonics often results in only short-term gains, and a greater focus on vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency is necessary as students progress. Dr. Rasinski encouraged educators to balance systematic phonics with the kind of rich, meaningful reading experiences LevelUp Reader offers.
