Measuring Fluency with the Multidimensional Fluency Scale
When it comes to building strong readers, fluency goes beyond speed—it includes expression, rhythm, and how naturally a student reads aloud. That’s why LevelUp Reader partnered with fluency expert Dr. Tim Rasinski to develop the Multidimensional Fluency Scale. This easy-to-use four-point rubric evaluates students in four key areas: rhythm and phrasing, expression and volume, automaticity, and pacing. A score of 1 indicates a need for growth, while a score of 4 reflects strong fluency skills. With a maximum score of 16, educators can quickly identify students who may need additional support if their total falls below 10.
What makes this tool especially valuable is its simplicity and ease of integration with daily teaching. Since teachers already listen to students read every day, they can naturally assess fluency during regular instruction. LevelUp Reader enhances this process through built-in technology that allows teachers to record student readings for later review. During quiet classroom moments or after school, educators can revisit those recordings and use the rubric to guide instruction—making fluency assessment both practical and powerful.
